Madagascar
Adoption
Advocate for Madagascar
Overview
This country on the southeastern coast of Africa is situated on an island. It is the fourth largest island in the world, slightly larger than France.

Although Intercountry adoptions from Madagascar are not new (several European countries place children with families in Europe), it is a new program for US Citizens.

Children Available:Children between the ages of 13 months – 12 years old are eligible for intercountry adoption. Both boys and girls are available for placement. Most children will speak French or Malagasy and maybe a local dialec depending on the location of the orphanage. Children are usually abandoned by their birth families or voluntarily relinquished.

Parent Qualifications: Married couples only may adopt from Madagascar. Must be married for at least a minimum of 2 years at home study approval. At least one parent must be over the age of 30 years old. Although there is not an upper age limit restricted by Madagascar, no more than 50 years is strongly recommended. No more than three children can reside in the home. Families cannot have any major medical issues, history of chemical abuse or major criminal history (including DUIs).

Travel: Adoption from Madagascar is a two trip process to country. The first trip is between 2-3 weeks. Both parents must travel on this trip. One family member can travel home after 10 days. There is roughly 3 – 4 months between trips. The second trip is 1-2 weeks. One family member can travel on their own to bring the child home to the US.

Timeline: Unknown at the time of this writing.

Tips:To get started, please read the RainbowKids Adoption Guide (left menu) first. The next step is to contact and compare agencies. You may easily do this by using the Contact Wizard on our website. Receiving feedback about agencies from an online discussion group is always helpful as well. Finally, when you bring your child home, be sure and send your story to RainbowKids. We love hearing from proud new families!
