| Overview |
Update May 2008: The country of Vietnam is no longer placing children with families in the USA.
Vietnam is a beautiful country whose true jewels are its children. Unfortunately, due to widespread poverty, many children fill the orphanages of Vietnam and need families. There is a widespread support system in the USA for families who have adopted from Vietnam. This community is both online and in all states. Please explore the links below to discover even more information about this program.
Children Available: Children of all ages are available, from infants to teens. Only one child at a time may be adopted unless the children are siblings.
Parent Qualifications: Couples and single women and men may adopt from Vietnam. Vietnam's age requirements have been that parents must be 20 years older than the child. Usually adoptive parents are between 25-50 but exceptions may be made for older or younger on a case-by-case basis. Families under 50 years old are permitted to adopt an infant. Families 50-55 can adopt a child 1-3 years old; 55-60 can adopt a 3-5 year old and families over 60 must be open to a child over 5 years old. Families with more than five children living at home are considered on a case-by-case basis, but rumor has it that Vietnam is semi-flexible about family size.
Travel: Only one trip is required for approximately 2 weeks.
Timeline: Currently, a referral is received about 3-4 months after your dossier is submitted. This timeline may increase as more people decide to adopt from Vietnam. Travel is 3-4 months after referral.
Tips:To get started, please read the RainbowKids Adoption Guide (left menu) first. The next step is to contact and compare agencies. You may easily do this by using the Contact Wizard on our website. Receiving feedback about agencies from an online discussion group is always helpful as well. Finally, when you bring your child home, be sure and send your story to RainbowKids. We love hearing from proud new families!
